“Famous Fort Armstrong”
Wednesday, June 24th

Initially we travel back in time to 1816, when construction began on Ft. Armstrong. We will learn about the Black Hawk War, and the roles that Colonel Davenport and Antoine Le-Claire played in the war, and find the connection of the slave Dred Scott and Fort Arm-strong. You will be surprised at how many famous individuals in our early American history are connected to Ft Armstrong and the Rock Island Arsenal.

The Rock Island Arsenal Museum, the Army’s second oldest museum after West Point, has joined forces with the Putman Museum to create a one of a kind exhibit combining both collections. The Arsenal museum first opened to the public in 1905 focuses on “People, Processes, and Products,” that made the Arsenal an important part of our region.

A D-Day Normandy film narrated by Tom Brokaw shown on the Putnam’s National Geographic Giant Screen Theater tells the story of this turning point in world history. This is the clearest view yet of what happened, and gives us a chance to understand one of the most important events in the history of man-kind.

Lunch will be on your own at one of your fa-vorite restaurant’s “Cracker Barrel”.
